Mixture Instructions

Bath Care Mixing Instructions:

Gel and clear bath products can react differently to various
fragrances or essential oils. Some may become cloudy or thin, others may
thicken, and some may remain unchanged. Each fragrance or essential oil behaves
differently. Fragrance suppliers are not required to disclose all
components in their blends, often citing “proprietary information.” Ingredients
can include butylene, propylene glycol, glycerin, carrier oils, hexane, or
other combined solvents — all of which can affect the product’s texture and clarity.

Common Reactions & Solutions

1.
Cloudy Appearance (not caused by bubbles)

Cause:
The fragrance or essential oil is not fully blending into the gel.

Solution:
Pre-blend the fragrance with a solubilizer before adding it to the gel,
especially if using heavier fragrance loads.

2.
Product Becomes Watery

Cause:
The fragrance has thinned the gel base.

Solution:
Add a small amount of table salt to increase viscosity, then wait overnight
before judging results. If too much salt is added, the gel may break — simply
add distilled or deionized water to dilute the salt. If needed, use a gel
thickener. Important: if the water is added, a preservative must be included to
prevent microbial growth.

3.
Gel Becomes Too Thick or Jelly-Like

Cause:
The fragrance has increased viscosity too much.

Solution: Allow the mixture to
sit overnight, as the texture may normalize. If still too thick the next day,
add a small amount of distilled or deionized water. Important: If water is
added, a preservative must be included to prevent microbial growth. Before you
begin testing, disinfect all utensils, containers, and equipment that will come
in contact with the product with a mist of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
from a spray bottle.

Tools & Materials:

-Plastic container

-Scale (optional)

-Spoons & stirring utensils

-Plastic zip-lock or freezer bags
(for pouring and storing samples)

-Fragrance Color (optional)

-Solubilizer (test in advance to
see if it’s needed)

Testing Steps:

1.
Place
your container on a scale and “zero” the reading. If you don’t have a scale,
use a graduated measuring cup.

2.
Pour a predetermined amount of gel base into the
container. A good test amount is 240 ml (8 oz) as it’s easy to measure and work
with.

3.
Add fragrance or essential oil at 0.5% to start.
For 240 ml (8 oz), this equals ½ teaspoon of fragrance.

4.
Stir slowly to avoid creating bubbles. Check
results. If you want a stronger scent, add an additional ⅓ teaspoon and observe
for changes. If the gel still looks good, add color (if desired). Let it sit
overnight to confirm it keeps the same consistency. If the gel becomes very
cloudy and doesn’t clear overnight, you will need to restart.

Note: To prevent separation, use
a solubilizer. A solubilizer breaks fragrance oils into tiny droplets so they
disperse evenly.

5.
Blend 1 part fragrance to 1 part solubilizer in
a separate container. Example: ½ teaspoon fragrance + ½ teaspoon solubilizer,
mixed well.

6.
Add this blend to the gel and observe. If all
looks good and you want a higher fragrance load, add ⅓ teaspoon fragrance + ⅓
teaspoon solubilizer. Watch for both cloudiness and viscosity changes.

Note: If you notice a drop in viscosity, add table
salt to thicken: For 240 ml (8 oz), start with ¼ teaspoon salt. Stir slowly
until dissolved. If there’s little change, add another ¼ teaspoon. Wait
overnight before bottling. If it becomes too watery, add distilled or deionized
water to reduce salt concentration. If problems persist, use a gel thickener. To
fill bottles, pour gel into a zip-lock or freezer bag, cut a small corner off,
and squeeze into bottles. Pour directly from the container if the gel is thin enough.
