Mixture Instructions

Lip Balm, Solid Lotion & Solid Perfume – Mixing Instructions

A double boiler is the most reliable and controllable way to melt your ingredients. Never leave the process unattended or within reach of children.

For coloring, use oil-soluble lake colors—water-based colors will not work.

Before You Start – Tools & Materials

• Two pots (one small enough to fit inside the other, about ½ gallon or larger) with a lid
• Thermometer
• Ladle
• Rubber spatula for stirring
• Glass or plastic pitcher
• Scale (optional)
• Pots, jars, or molds for pouring

Melting Process

1. Fill the larger (bottom) pot with enough water so the smaller (inner) pot begins to float.

2. Place your Lip Balm, Solid Lotion, or Solid Perfume ingredients into the inner pot.

3. Set the burner to medium heat.

4. The mixture should melt in under 1 hour. Ideal temperature: 65–70°C (140–160°F).

Coloring & Scenting

• Colors: Mix oil-soluble lake colors separately before adding. Stir thoroughly into the melted mixture.
• • ​Test by pouring a small amount into a clear container and allowing it to set for 20–30 minutes.
  • ​Colors will usually lighten as the product turns opaque.

• Scents:

• • ​Lip Balm – use flavor oils.
  • ​Solid Lotion – use fragrance or essential oils (approx. 2 tsp per 32 oz). Scent strength varies by type.
  • ​Solid Perfume – use fragrance or essential oils suitable for skin.

Pouring

Pour the finished mixture into your chosen containers or molds.

Tip: If poured while too hot, the surface may form a dip or “well” in the center as it cools. For Solid Lotion, overheating may also cause surface cracking.
