Vegetable Protein Deodorant – Mixing Instructions 

A double boiler is the preferred method for melting and mixing your deodorant base, as it provides gentle, even heat and better control.

If you want colour, water-based FD&C, certain pigments, and mica can work, although there can be a tendency for “dropout” or sediment settling at the bottom.

Before You Start

Gather the following: pots or a double boiler, thermometer, ladle, rubber spatula for stirring, glass or plastic pitcher, scale (optional), and deodorant containers.

Instructions

1. Select two pots where one will fit inside the other (about ½ gallon or larger, plus a lid).

2. Fill the bottom pot with water until the inner pot starts to float.

3. Place the vegetable deodorant base into the inner pot and set your burner to medium.

4. Allow to melt for about 30 minutes. If using a thermometer, heat to 45–50 °C (110–120 °F). Do not boil!

5. Add your chosen colours and mix thoroughly. Pour a small sample into a clear container and let it set for 20–30 minutes. Colours will usually lighten as the product becomes slightly opaque, and the base’s natural pale-yellow tint will influence the final shade.

6. Add fragrance or essential oils (if desired). As a guideline, use about 1 tablespoon (15 ml or 0.8%) per 64 oz (1.8 kg) of base. Adjust to suit the strength of your scent and your personal preference.

7. Pour the mixture into your chosen containers.

Tip

If bubbles appear around the rim after pouring, lightly mist with rubbing or isopropyl alcohol. The bubbles will vanish as the alcohol evaporates.
