Soap Pouring Instructions – Double Boiler MethodThe double boiler is the most reliable and controllable way to melt your glycerine soap base. It prevents overheating, ensures even melting, and avoids damaging the soap or container. Follow the “melt & pour” steps below for smooth, professional results. Common issues are addressed in steps #9 and #10.Items You Will Need for Bulk PouringTwo pots (one smaller to fit inside the other, about 1.5 gallons or larger) or a large double boiler with a lidThermometerLadleRubber spatula for stirringGlass or plastic pitcherScale (optional, but recommended)Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in a spray bottleFragrance or essential oils (optional)Colorants (optional)Soap molds of any shape, as long as they allow easy soap removalInstructionsPlace the smaller pot inside the larger pot (or use a double boiler). If you have a lid, it will help retain heat.Fill the bottom pot with water until the smaller pot begins to float.Cut the glycerine soap base into small pieces, about 8–12 chunks per pound.Place the chunks into the smaller pot and set the burner to medium heat.Allow the soap to melt slowly, stirring occasionally. This will take about 1 hour. Using a thermometer, check that the temperature stays between 65–70°C (140–160°F).Add colorants if desired. Test small amounts first, as some bases (such as Hemp or Olive Oil) have a natural yellow tint that will affect the final color. Allow the soap to sit for 20–30 minutes for the colors to stabilize, as they may lighten over time.Add fragrance or essential oils — Use 1–3% of the total melted soap weight, depending on scent strength and type. Citrus scents may require a higher percentage due to heat evaporation.With color and scent added, prepare your molds and have your scale ready if weighing each soap. Using a ladle, pour the melted soap into a glass or plastic pitcher for controlled pouring into molds. Work quickly but carefully to prevent the soap from beginning to set.Tip: For large batches, a clean 50-cup coffee urn works very well. Run hot water through it first to warm it, then drain. Pour in melted soap, dispense directly into molds, and weigh as you go.Remove surface bubbles by lightly misting the soap with isopropyl alcohol immediately after pouring into each mold. The alcohol will evaporate instantly.If soap sticks to the mold after cooling, dip the mold in hot water briefly or place it in the freezer for a short time.All soaps shrink about 8–12% as they set; if weight is important, account for this in your measurements.
